First off, this class has been very challenging from the start. I was afraid and didn’t know what would be expected of me throughout the semester. I think that is very normal in a new class. We have a new professor and we have to feel each other out a little. I do believe things have become a little more clear through the first five weeks, and this class stresses me out a lot less than some of my others. Having said that, I am still afraid sometimes that I won’t have an idea for my next VO/VOSOTVO just randomly throughout the day.
Anyway, my first vosotvo on William Allen White’s 150th birthday celebration at the J-School went alright. I have been around cameras and making videos long enough that I know nothing ever goes exactly to plan when you start. This was the case for my project. My plan A was to film something completely different. It involved going to the rec and finding out if their attendance decreases during the winter. Needless to say, they would not let me film and I was left scrambling for an idea. Luckily, the birthday celebration came up and I was able to get there and film.
My video turned out better than I thought it was going to when I was filming. I needed more shots, and maybe a better variety as well. The hardest part of this for me was the script, and it made me really happy that Doctor Collins liked some of my words because I often struggle with writing. I am always going to be working on delivery. I am often a quiet person, and I need to be able to speak up more. I think for this being the first vosotvo, I did alright. I’d give myself a 6 out of 10, and I know I need to improve on my storytelling, combining my words with visuals and improving my delivery.
