The Rolston String Quartet

Did I think the show was interesting? Yes. Will I go to another quartet performance again? Questionable.

This weekend was the final week of performances and seeing that I needed to make up an assignment I found myself at Krannert at 2:30 for the Rolston String Quartet.

When I arrived, I noticed how empty the theatre was and I didn’t know if that was because it was a Sunday or if this was just not the type of performance people wanted to see. It could be both.

Something that really stood out to me was the way the quartet played their instruments. The movements that they made, swaying with their bows, and feeling the intensity of sharp notes, while fluid with the peaceful melodies. This was so intriguing to me especially at the point in the performance where the music they played reminded me of the music played in a scary or suspenseful movie. Typically I associate that music with darkness and evil, however, watching the quartet play these pieces I saw beauty. There was emotion in the way that they played these pieces that were far beyond the suspenseful scenes I have associated the sounds with before.

I can say for sure that this performance was mainly for the older crowd. With that being said, I did not enjoy the performance just because it was not very entertaining. The style of music I like to listen to is more on the R&B and Hip-Hop side so classical music is not something I have yet come to appreciate.
