The Krannert Center for Performing Arts had a wonderful event Friday night, it was a Latin Dance Night. The event was held at the lobby/stage 5 with a DJ who played all genres of Latin music – reggaeton, bachata, cumbia, salsa, merengue, and even pop songs!
There was a big crowd of people, an interesting variety from couples dressed up to the nines to older men and women dancing carefreely. Everyone’s ability to dance also ranged but it was great to see everyone together.
When the event started, no one was on the dance floor. Though, once the DJ started to play more favorable songs, everyone started to dance. I attended the event with my boyfriend, and we both danced as well for a while.
Funnily enough, I feel this event really demonstrates the power of dance. Not everyone could dance, but as long as you are moving and having fun – it doesn’t matter. There were people smiling as they danced and others smiling along watching in their seats. I am glad that the awkward start quickly diminished the event eventually became a party.
Since this event was co-hosted by La Casa Cultural Latina, there were many people I knew. This made it a more approachable event for me, as I could dance with my friends as well.
These types of events seem to be a great opportunity to bring the community of Champaign-Urbana together. There is no need to be experienced, all this event requires is for you to move yourself/body along with the music. I would have loved to have known about such events and understand it better, I would have dressed up for dancing!
I really enjoyed the event and wished I could have dressed up and prepared my schedule to have spent a longer time there. It was very fun and even became a memorable night to me!
