On December 6, a pre-performance before The Nutcracker was performed by the Edison Middle School Jazz Band on Stage 5 at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. They have performed a series of Jazz music with their teacher, Ms. Branch’s Corner.
The music program at Edison Middle School has over 180 students. There are three concert bands, one concert honor band, three jazz combos, orchestra, and choir. The EMS Jazz Ensemble has participated in many festivals including the New Trier Jazz Festival, IGSMA district festival, and the Purdue jazz festival. Edison has performed in numerous locations including the Krannert Center and the Park District.
Ms. Branch’s Corner has toured with the Northern Illinois Jazz Ensemble with many world reknown guest artist such as Wycliffe Gordon, Sean Jones, and Randy Brecker to name a few. She has worked with numerous elementary, middle, and high schools around Illinois, Florida, and Wisconsin as well as numerous jazz camps such as the Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Camp in Fort Lauderdale, FL and the Northern Illinois Jazz camp in DeKalb, IL.
I felt Ms. Branch’s Corner is a really humorous lady. She lead the band to perform Jazz music with her voice and her own beats. It really brought up me and the audience together to flow with the Jazz. On the other hand, it was hard to believe that the show was performed by a bunch of teenagers. They all dressed up with their musical instruments in their hand which made everyone at the scene was proud of them.
