The interesting thing about this story is, the students want more work. BSW is short for Building Service Worker, and students essentially clean the buildings around campus. But due to a lack of buildings and full-time employees getting jobs, students are left to do tedious work instead of feeling like they are contributing to the university. Also, the lack of work leads many students that if things do not work out quickly and students continue to do “busy work” then they will eventually lose their jobs.
|<STEVEN ON CAM LEAD>STUDENT BUILDING SERVICE WORKERS AT U OF I HAVE RECENTLY CHANGED CLOCK-IN STATIONS LEAVING MANY STUDENTS IN A MESSY SITUATION. (:08)
TWO MONTHS AGO STUDENT BUILDING SERVICE WORKERS…ALSO KNOWN AS BSWs…MADE A DRASTIC SHIFT TO WHERE THEY PUNCH-IN FOR WORK.
INSTEAD OF SIGNING IN TO LOCATIONS THAT WERE CONVINIENT FOR THE STUDENTS, EVERYONE NOW PUNCHES IN AT BEVIER HALL… CAUSING SOME STUDENTS TO LOSE HOURS AND MONEY.
SENIOR AND STUDENT BUILDING SERVICE WORKER… JOE CAIRO… IS STILL TRYING TO ADJUST TO THE CHANGE. (:22)
“I preferred the previous one I guess a little bit because I was more on my own kind of just and I knew what I was going to do everyday and just had to show up and do it.” (:09)
BEFORE THE CLOCK STATION CHANGE STUDENTS WORKED FROM A JOB SHEET… BUT NOW THEY DO WHAT IS CALLED PERIODIC WORK… SUCH AS CLEANING HANDRAILS AND CLASSROOM DESKS.
THE STUDENT B-S-W FOREMAN … NATE PAYNE.. BELIEVES THIS PROGRAM IS HERE TO STAY EVEN WITH THE CHANGES. (:15)
|<SOT 2>I DO SEE IT EXPANDING AND LASTING.. THE UNIVERSTIY LIKES TO SEE STUDENTS WORKING… IN THAT WAY I SEE IT LASTING. (:08)
WHILE THE UNIVERSITY LIKES TO SEE STUDENTS WORKING, THERE ARE 18 STUDENTS AT ONE CLOCK-IN STATION AND THEY’RE HOPING FORE MORE STABILITY. (:07)
“once they figure out more and they get more familiar with how to handle us it’ll become more clear.” (:07)
WITH NO CLEAR FUTURE IN SIGHT STUDENT B-S-Ws CONTINUE TO GO TO WORK AS THEY HAD BEFORE… ONLY THIS TIME THEY WONDER IF THEY’LL BE NEEDED TOMORROW. (:08)
IN ORDER TO EFFECTIVELY EXPAND THE PROGRAM, MORE BUILDINGS ON CAMPUS WOULD FIRST HAVE TO COME AVAILABLE TO SERVICE. (:07)
