Just last Tuesday, Illinois became the 15th state to allow same sex marriages by passing the Marriage Equality Act! Illinois had the reputation of being a conservative and inclusive state to the LGBT community, but now things are starting to look different. I interviewed two sophomore women who are in a relationship for fourteen months. Already, the two are excited that they can get married anytime they want. Just wait until you see their reaction.
For Assignment 8, it had to be done in the midst of my midterm papers and projects for four different classes! Planning was very difficult and getting in contact with sources was even harder. Once I was able to convince the coordinator for the LGBT Resource Center here on campus to have me interview her, I found that my camera didn’t record our excellent ten minute interview. Last, minute I ran around (literally!) campus trying to find an “expert” for my story, but due to her ignoring my Facebook messages and texts, I had no luck. Also, I don’t know what’s going on with the churches on campus but they all seem too busy for a reporter! …C’est la vie, I guess.
Although I didn’t get to interview an “expert” , I know that I captured true emotion that majority of the LGBT community feels towards Illinois making being gay part of the norm. 🙂
