How to Carve a Pumpkin

With Halloween right around the corner, every door step needs a decorative invite for their trick-or-treaters. A Jack-o- lantern is the perfect decoration to show your visitors you have the best treats on the block. It’s also a fun activity to get the family together!img_0135

First, you must pick out the perfect pumpkin. Pumpkins can be found at any local grocery store, farm stand, or pumpkin patch. Make sure that your pumpkin is smooth enough that you can make a fun design on it, and make sure it is not spoiled!

Next, after you have selected your perfect pumpkin, you can begin your prepping for the carving. You will need a sharp kitchen knife and little saws if you are one for detail,. The little saws can be found in pumpkin carving kits typically found at grocery or drug stores. These kits also have stencils you can attempt. ¬†You will also need a large bowl and some large spoons to scoop out the pumpkin “guts” and the seeds.

First, you must cut the top out off your pumpkin to get the hollow inside for your candle. This can be done using a sharp kitchen knife. Once you are done with that, you can begin scooping the guts out of the pumpkin.

As soon as the pumpkin is hollow, you can now prepare to carve. You can use a stencil of your own or one found online to help guide you through the actual carving. My dad likes to use his knife to stencil the design to remove room for error.

Then, you can trace the outline with a sharpie or dark marker. After you have traced an outline, you can then begin carving into your pumpkin with the sharp knife and detail saws. After this is complete, you can place a candle in the inside of your pumpkin, place the lid back on, and display it on your front porch for all too see!

Have a safe and fun Halloween!
