The Dog Days have Just Begun- Sullivan Assignment 3

For this video essay, I had originally planned to do something entirely different. However, my main connection fell through, so I had to go to plan B. One of my coworkers, Joli, has a dog on campus, and I thought it would be interesting to do a video essay about her to get some perspective on what it’s like working, being a student, and taking care of a pet. Plus I love dogs!

Something I had not counted on was how hard Franz (Joli’s dog) would be to film. I had met him before, but I guess I’d forgotten how rambunctious he is. I found it nearly impossible to shoot him with the tripod, because he would not stay in the shot for more than a couple of seconds at a time. Also, he’s so small that the tripod made every shot look really far away. I know that I have a very shaky arm, so I decided to try a lot of shots that were low to the ground. This gave the project an interesting angle, but it was really mostly to steady my arm on the floor.

I liked this picture because you could see his tag

I also found myself subconsciously zooming the camera in and out. To be frank I’d forgotten that we were not supposed to do this, and I also felt like I needed to follow Franz as he ran around, especially with the tighter shots. I didn’t want to have a shot of nothing.

I was disappointed that a lot of my shots were shakier than I’d hoped for, but I was overall happy with my final product. I spent a lot of time editing it and putting it together, and I thought it came out well. I was glad I got to score this project; the song I used is called “Walking the Dog,” so I thought it was very fitting. If I could do it again, I would have tried to use the tripod more, and I probably would have just left the camera on the floor and let it film for a couple of minutes to see what kind of footage I got of Franz.

I decided to call my project “The Dog Days have Just Begun” for a couple of reasons: one, it’s a play on the phrase “the dog days are over,” and two, Joli just got Franz last year- she’s in it for the long haul, so her “dog days” have just begun.

    Maggie,

Great job on your assignment! I really enjoyed the lighter tone, I honestly sometimes prefer those over more somber affairs. I noticed that some of your shots were a little on the shaky side (nowhere near modern action movie level), and I think in those instances, you might benefit from using your tripod. I know puppies are very hyperactive and difficult to really direct, but if you took more wide shots of him as he played, I think you would yield more focused results. Aside from that, I think you did a marvelous job as far as storytelling. It was easy to follow, simple, and cute. I look forward to viewing more of your work in the future!

    Best,
