When we were given this assignment, I knew right away that I wanted to tell a story about a person. And, more importantly, I wanted to give them power in the piece – the power to use their voice. Additionally, because this was a video essay, I knew I needed interesting b-roll. My friend recommended that I talk to one of her Architecture classmates who was working with robotics in one of his courses. Architecture and robots? I was instantly sold on the idea and contacted her classmate right away. Continue reading “Built Form”
PREPPING IT (BEGINNING)
I started off the video by getting all the materials needed to barbecue. Then I got shots of the barbecue being prepped. Some standard shots of cutting up the pieces of meat and gathering the chicken followed. Also, getting the ground meat and forming it into a burger-shaped form. I then showed the beginning process of gathering the vegetables and placing everything on the stick, to make shish kebob. I showed the meats being seasoned and marinated, so they can get that good taste! Then I gathered all the prepped meats and vegetables and provided a shot of that. It was basically the beginning product. This part of the video is something any person can watch and follow themselves. The seasoning and marination of the meats were a unique way of seasoning, that I have used for many years. Check it out if you are interested in my approach to seasoning! Being a college kid, my weekdays seem to be repeating the same things over and over again. But I thought it might be cool if I used assignment 3 as an opportunity to record what I usually do on the U of I campus.
For assignment #3, I decided to film the multiple facets of student life inside the public undergraduate dorm, Illinois Street Residence Hall (ISR) located on the campus of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It became an interest of mine to see what students were up to on a Thursday night, as well as to see if or how residential life has changed since I last lived in ISR (a couple of years ago, as a freshman). Students are seen purchasing food, studying, and even playing an instrument in the common areas of the main lounge on the ‘Townsend’ side and the la carte shop CHOMPS.
It’s one of the craziest days on campus: Sorority Bid Day. When you get to run home to the house you wanted and start lifelong memories with new friends. As a freshman, it can be scary and awkward. But for the rest of us, it’s one of the happiest days of the year.
For Assignment 3 (video essay) in Professor Collin’s class, I wanted to capture the fun of Bid Day in my sorority, Alpha Phi. After having my life taken over by recruitment for the past couple of weeks, Bid Day is an amazing day where all the hard work pays off. I loved capturing how colorful and energetic this day was in my video, which you can watch here.
Overall, I enjoyed documenting Rosh Hashanah, and the feedback I received from my classmates as well as Professor Collins was all very positive. I struggled with deadline, but I did manage to make it. I did not manage to include a well thought out blog or hyperlink to an additional page which would have added to my story. I added that after class though. The main reason I fell behind was because I originally intended to use sound bites from my voice recorder and have a few voice overs of myself explaining the story. This will come in handy for next week’s project and the video package. I am eager to do better, so I may practice editing ahead of time so I can work more efficiently in the classroom.
It was also difficult considering I could not shoot videos inside the hall where the service and dinner took place for Rosh Hashanah, but regardless it all worked out.
For assignment 3, I documented the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah.) I was unable to document the service and celebration because electronics were not aloud inside the hall where both the service and celebration took place. Instead I documented what I could to the best of my ability. My video essay can be located here!
More information about the holiday and Hillel (where the holiday took place) can be located on the Hillel website. There is information regarding the upcoming holiday Yom Kippur.

For Assignment 3, we had to take the audio that we recorded in preparation for Assignment 2 and incorporate it with the still shots. I’m surprised by how smoothly it went and I feel more comfortable editing on Premiere this time around. Continue reading “Reflection 3 – Finally getting the hang of this”
I’m back again, and this time with sound! Have you ever heard the “cooing” sound a guinea pig makes when you pet its bottom? If not, then you’re going to enjoy my latest video. If you have, then you’re going to enjoy it anyway because it’s just so darn cute to hear. Continue reading “Fuzzy Therapy Reflection Ogrodnik”
For our third assignment, we had to record and edit natural sound into our picture essay that we completed for assignment 2. While it seemed like a pretty straightforward task, I ended up realizing how easy it is to make a mistake. Continue reading “A Night at the UGL-Assignment 3”
