When I received the Journalism 215 syllabus in my email during those last few weeks of summer, I instantly felt a little overwhelmed. It was 14 pages long. Senior year shouldn’t be stressful, right? How was I going to survive this semester? I was a writer not a videographer, photographer, or designer.
As it turns out, I am all of those things.
It just took some time. I had to check my pride a lot. Often times I had to use plan B, plan C, or even plan D when plan A didn’t work out. In the end this class was a very humbling experience. Looking back at all my assignments I’m so proud of my visible progress. I’m actually sad to be finished with this class. That is something so rare for me. It really did feel like a journey. For our third assignment we had to do a video essay. Initially I wanted to cover some type of sporting event on campus for my video essay, but I ended up being sick all weekend and wasn’t really up to leaving my apartment. I wanted to capture something more “newsworthy,” but I’m happy with the outcome.
I am also very happy with how my audio compliments my video this week. Last week in my photo essay my audio was not very distinctive and did not really help tell my story. This week all my sounds push the story along.
It was also a new challenge to learn how to film myself. Learning to focus while I was moving in and out of the frame was difficult at first, but I got the hang of it. I also discovered that I could flip the display screen on the camera so that helped.
I wanted to try some unique camera shots this time. For example, for some shots I wanted to use the camera to appear as if I was looking into a mirror while getting ready. I also used doorway to capture depth.
Overall, I’m pleased with my third assignment. My planning of my third assignment made the editing process go much smoother. This time I had the order of shots I wanted all written down before I even got to lab. For our next assignment, I want to step out of my comfort zone a little and try to capture some content that is “newsworthy.”
