Stix- Video Essay Assignment 3 Ramirez

The Process

From the beginning I had no idea what I was going to shoot. I like assignments that are a little more specific and tell me what I need to do. Although a rubric was given, I needed some more direction. Kind of like the one we got in assignment two. I put on my thinking cap and came up with the idea to film my new friend and his drumming skills.

My mind was everywhere and in between before I decided to film Matthew’s drumming. I thought maybe I’d film my best friend’s dog or maybe a day in the life of a perspective student. When I found my topic, I filmed him for about 2 hours playing drums. While filming, I had my camera on the tri-pod for a long time until I decided I needed to be closer and get more tight shots. I took my camera off the tri-pod, sat on the floor, and started filming his foot hitting the drum. Then I stood up and tried to get some video from a medium shot. I also wanted to make sure my shots were focused and not shaky.

I also knew that my natural sound had to be perfect since I was filming a musician and the sound of the drums would be a very important part of the video. I played around a lot in Adobe Audition and used de-hummer and noise stabilizer a lot!

Another hard part to making this video was deciding how I was going to end it. I knew it had to be related to how drummers end their sets, so I filmed Matthew placing his sticks on the top of his drum and I thought that would be a good place to end.

Reflection:

Looking back on my assignment, I wish I didn’t play it safe. I did want to make sure I included all the aspects to the rubric, but I should have been more creative. I really wish I got a high angle of Matthew playing, along with some shots behind him. I also wish I added some of the video of him talking to the camera so it shows the audience who is talking. I tried to focus too much on the drum playing, instead of the person playing the drums. I did enjoy this assignment and the editing portion, but if I were to do it again, I would try to think out side of the box a little more. This was by far the hardest assignment and I took the simple route when I should have gone all out.

For the next assignment, I am going to take the critique I got today and make sure that doesn’t happen. I will think outside the box ! Let’s Go!

All Good Things Must Come to an End

This semester was great because of Dr. Collins and J-215. This course was one of the best journalism classes I’ve taken at this university.

Our first assignment was a little tricky for me because I had to get used to using the Canon T5i. I grew up in a journalist lead household, but I never had the opportunity to use that specific DSLR camera.

The photoessay assignment came a little easier because I started using my camera more frequently after assignment one. We were required to have two versions, with sound and without sound. This assignment allowed me to truly focus in on video and music production because I needed to truly find the most ideal music to fit the pictures. My editing during this time was growing as well. After being in an After School Matters program at IMPACT Family Center for more than six years allowed me to come into this class more familiar with the concepts, skills, and experience to succeed.

For the third assignment, I decided to capture ‘A Day in the Life of Grace‘. I decided to do a video essay on my church’s conference in October. It was pastor’s appreciation month, and Rev. K. Edward Copeland came as a guest preacher on the second weekend of October.

All of the assignments kept becoming easier.

Assignment four was great! I am enrolled in J-335, which is audio journalism. This assignment was relatively easy because of my other class I was pretty versed with Adobe Audition.

Assignment five allowed me to shine light on my home, the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center. A Tale Without a Head talks about the problems the center has

Catching the Beat… This was a personal touch. Me and my buddy James Sims decided to do a how to piece about playing drums. This video shows one how to do a single stroke roll and a single paradiddle. I pushed myself on this project to get clear sound and video from different angles and everything.

Our final project was the greatest one of all. We decided to do a website to be more creative and to refer to future employers. I completed the photoessay, edited the audio package, and did the infographic.

Don’t lose faith. If you know a lot of material and know how to work all of the cameras or if you don’t, please know that you will survive if you work together and utilize Dr. Collins’ active centralized empowerment. Have a blessed day and hit me up if you need me. 🙂

Assignment 2 “Black Life at a P.W.I” Eaglin-Daniels

Assignment two was definitely a fun one! I enjoyed coming up with different concepts on how I should go about capturing a good claim through photos. I had so many ideas in my head, but I came to a conclusion to show my people in a different light and respect compared to the mainstream ideas people have about us. We had to create a video project with and without sound to show how our audio enhances our pictures, especially adding natural sound. This assignment is one for the books. I am bonding more with my camera, and I, actually, have the eye trick Professor Collins told us about down packed. My shots look better when I use that tip.
