Love Smith’s impact on sales, Assign4Kaufman

Since signing at the University in April, local businesses, the Athletic Department and students have experienced a change in school spirit. After speaking with Gameday Spirit retail manager, Cory Shumard, it is clear that sales have increased drastically. Especially, sales of the Lovie T-shirt released by the athletic department.

The Illini nation has been gobbling those up and it feels like those items almost seem to go out the door as fast as they come in,” Shumard said. “So, We have been very happy with keeping up with that and we are going to ride that horse as long as we can.”

Marketing assistant in the Athletic Department, Stephanie Bailen explained the day Lovie was hired the department sold 35 thousand dollars worth of tickets.

“It definitely brought a lot more notoriety to U of I sports because when I came here as a Freshman I didn’t even consider the football games,” said Louis Sagan Junior in LAS.

Grange Grove

For my photo essay assignment, I chose to capture the essence of Grange Grove located outside of Memorial Stadium. On a game day, Grange Grove and its surrounding area is crowded with countless Illini fans covering the area in orange. The time I chose to take these photos was different because it wasn’t on a Saturday afternoon before the Illinois football team kicks off. Instead, I took these photos on a Sunday evening when the sky was dimmed, and the only life around the stadium was mostly that of cars passing by on their way back to campus.

With the stadium lit with orange and blue reflection lights throughout the front panels, the gold Red Grange statue stands out amongst the grassy field and walkway leading up to it.

As the night comes to a close, the sky goes dark, but Memorial Stadium remains lit to brighten the south end of campus. It may be quiet now, but come Saturday, Grange Grove will once again be filled with Illini fans of all ages patiently waiting for yet another Illinois win.

Preparing for the University of Illinois Homecoming

Story By: Colleen Cavanagh

Homecoming week and weekend are always major events that take much planning during the Fall at the University of Illinois.

Events such as the Homecoming Pep Rally, Parade and Bags Tournament are exciting and highly anticipated here at U of I. While these events are fun and most always have a great turn-out, they are not planned by themselves. Much work goes into planning each event, while ensuring the campus is kept safe with the major influx of people around campus during Homecoming.

ILLINI FB: All Ears On The Quarterback Competition

This assignment really reminded me of Journalism 435, and I love it! Radio  is one of my favorite types of mediums, because it allows the audio to tell the story.

For my assignment, I did the quarterback competition, because it is probably the most talked about aspect of Spring football. I wanted people to be able to get an actual, concrete, information filled story from my audio, so I wanted great sources. I got soundbytes from the head coach, one of the quarterbacks, and a sportswriter, in order to show all aspects of the issue.
