Preparation Is Key: Nat Sound Piece

I knew what my nat sound piece was going to be about before we had even mentioned the assignment. Longboarding is a huge hobby of mine, and I just love watching people glide down the sidewalk between classes. It is one of the least annoying ways to get around campus, in my opinion. When was the last time you heard someone complain about being hit by a longboarder?

A few days before my shoot, I opened up the notes app on my iPhone and came up with a short list. I typed up what type of shots I was looking for, the basic structure I was thinking of following and what questions I thought viewers might want answer. Once I had all of this down, the assignment was as easy as breathing. After my initial “deer in the headlights” moment during my first editing session with the video essay, I was in and out of the lab in about three hours. Of course, there were a few hiccups, but I confronted those well.

My subject: longboarder Daniel “Danny” Takushi was the best I could have ever asked for. He did everything I asked and more. All his movement and answers were so natural. You would think he was born to be on camera. It definitely made my job a lot easier.

Overall, I am thrilled with how well this shoot went. This will not always be the case in the future. My career path will not be a simple one. If it were, I don’t think I’d be in this field. I just hope I find work I am as passionate about as I was this video on longboarding.
