It’s one of the craziest days on campus: Sorority Bid Day. When you get to run home to the house you wanted and start lifelong memories with new friends. As a freshman, it can be scary and awkward. But for the rest of us, it’s one of the happiest days of the year.
For Assignment 3 (video essay) in Professor Collin’s class, I wanted to capture the fun of Bid Day in my sorority, Alpha Phi. After having my life taken over by recruitment for the past couple of weeks, Bid Day is an amazing day where all the hard work pays off. I loved capturing how colorful and energetic this day was in my video, which you can watch here.
At first, I was very nervous to use my camera because I had never used a high tech camera before. I filmed around my sorority house and it was awkward asking people to film them and it felt weird walking around with the tripod and camera in public. Once I figured out how to use my camera, I started to feel more comfortable filming. The part I enjoyed the most was editing on Adobe because I picked up on it very quickly and it felt accomplishing once the video was finished. You can find the video here.
For assignment two, Professor Collins wanted us to shoot pictures of an event to show action. I liked the challenge of showing action through still frames. It was a unique concept that, I believe, turned out pretty well.
I choose to shoot my sorority’s Bid Day, which is the day when each sorority on campus gains their new members for the year. It was actually fun to look at this event from a new perspective by trying to take interesting shots from a variety of angles. I tried to capture the excited anticipation of the moments before the new girls arrived and the hysteria of the moments when they cam running down our street.
Putting together Assignment 2 was not as challenging as I thought it would be. I remembered most of the things that I had learned about Final Cut Pro from the last class. I finished the project with relative ease. The most difficult part of the assignment was deciding which photos to include in my video as I took well over the required 12.
